What's the Future Ever Done for Me?

Nick the Parkdale Barber

A photo from the star archives circa 1990. Does anyone remember this guy and where this photo was taken?

There’s a reflected sign in the b/g that reads Parkdale Furs.

I think the detective work by the readers has proven successful. 1606 Queen West appears to be the location.

The architecture of the store front makes sense and the indication of these two holes on the column line up with the original location of the barber’s pole….

The gas valve seems to line up as well.

Thanks to everyone that commented and helped solve this

Parkdale Mystery.

I think this was on the south side of Queen around Souraren which is east of Roncesvalles He was very old when I went in the next time when I went to go back he had closed down

Now having taken a closer look I see the Parkdale Furs sign which I think was on the northeast corner of Souraren and Queen which would mean this Barber Shop was on the north side of Queen east of Souraren

  3. Thanks for that. I’ll have a closer look at that intersection.

I think the last time I was in Toronto over a year ago Parkdale Furs was Peter’s Restaurant.
If the beauty parlour on the north side is still operating the Greek man would probably remember where everything was

There was a fur shop on the north side of queen but west of Souraren. It is now Gary Armstrong Woodwinds which is at 1612 Queen Street West. So if that’s the fur shop in the photo, then the barber shop might be 1606 which is now Calyx Wellness or something like that. It was the Feather Factory before that.

Actually I own 1610 Queen, so more familiarity than detective work. I moved into the neighbourhood in 1998 and there was no barber shop there at that time. I also have this weird Plexiglas polar bear that hung above the fur shop stashed away at my property.

    • I think 1606 is the right location.

    • I’ll take a photo of it and send it to you. It’s a little sad though. Thanks for posting that photo – I had no idea there was a barber shop there. Would love to know what happened to that barber.

  8. There were three barbers in this vicinity when I moved to the corner of Queen & Sorauren in the late ’80s. Oddly enough, this is the one where I never had a haircut/shave.
