What's the Future Ever Done for Me?

Carlaw Hydro Building

Carlaw Avenue. - February 3, 1919The hydro Building on Carlaw when it was new in 1919 (built in 1916). There appears to be a showroom of some sorts.

I can remember back in the ’50s hearing radio ads with the jingle

Hippity-hop to your Hydro Shop. I think the THES headquarters
on Carlton St. did show electrical appliances in their windows.

So . . .maybe other Hydro buildings were also
trying to extol the virtues of electrical appliances.

That’s what it looked like to me.

  4. I’m impressed with how seamlessly they erased the showroom from the corner and added the extension. Obviously there was a continuity of architectural style and building trades that made that possible. I find the whole idea of a Hydro showroom fascinating.

  5. I’m only guessing it was a showroom. But it does look like a retail window display.

Greg, I have several advertisements from 1917-1925 for the Toronto Hydro Shops which all list this store on Carlaw in the substation as being one of the branches. I would like to send them to you, but not certain how, as I do not see your address.
