What's the Future Ever Done for Me?

The Vesta Lunch on Dupont

I’d always believed that the Vesta Lunch was the inspiration for the famous Saturday Night Live sketch “Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger!”

P1040497After all, Dan Aykroyd lived in Toronto in the early 1970’s…

This video about the Billy Goat Tavern in Chicago dispels this belief.

The likely source of the Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger sketch is Dan observing the antics of the staff at the Maple Leaf Restaurant in the Canadian Building, 219 Laurier Ave. West in Ottawa. Dan’s father, Peter H. Aykroyd was on the management team for the Centennial Commission during Canada’s mega-anniversary celebration in 1967. The Commission was on an upper floor of the Canadian Bldg., and Dan likely saw the antics of the restaurant staff while visiting his father’s office in the mid-1960s. I worked in the building in 1967 and never forgot the “Cheeseboogie” guys!
