What's the Future Ever Done for Me?

Roncesvalles and Fern/Then and Now

I was born on Garden Avenue in 1935, but can’t remember this store. Mazza’s grocery store was on the south corner of Fern Ave. if I remember correctly.

    • Mazza’s is now a Tim Horton’s…

I love those before and after pictures 🙂 Looks like some of those kids went to school on…roller skates!? The lad on the right seems to feel his leg; maybe he fell before the photo was taken?

Interesting 1928 photo, Greg. A bit before my time. I don’t remember the corner store; my focus was always on Woolworths next door and its candy counter right inside the front door. In my opinion, the student gender mix is unusual – I count 16 girls and only 8 boys. Perhaps more girls lived west of Roncesvalles and more boys lived on the east side? Or maybe the girls wanted to go to the High Park Library. It was also one of my favorite spots.

When I was in Toronto earlier this year, the corner shop (shuttered in your later photo) was a deli/coffee shop which seemed to be doing a good business. I guess not good enough.

  5. The now photo is actually a screen capture from Google maps from a couple of years ago.
It was a real estate office for a while and now a Hot Oven bakery.
