What's the Future Ever Done for Me?

Queen and Dowling/Then and Now

Looking east across Dowling, 1912 or so. Note the Odeon Theatre on the left showing Photo Plays.

pictures-r-937 Screen Shot 2013-11-11 at 10.18.40 AMThe apartment building on the right was the scene of a terrible fire about 15 years ago. A former tenant (mentally disturbed) who had been evicted and returned and started a fire.

Queen was closed from Jameson to Sorauren and I counted 15 firetrucks on the scene. At least one person was killed. The building remained boarded up for years and was only recently restored.

  1. I lived in the building next door when the fire happened – had to pack my cats up and rush out onto the street to wait, in case the fire spread. The building was a terrifying dump; it’s in much better hands now. It’s a funny block – my building, which once housed a bowling alley, was sandwiched between two identical apartment buildings, all still standing. Parkdale has changed a lot since then.

  2. I’ve heard that your building was a notorious pool hall back in the 50’s as well.

    • I’ve heard that as well. Some of the apartments still had the bowling alley flooring. It was an amazing place to live – big, high ceilings, drafty as hell. A proper loft, and cheap – I never paid more than $600/month the whole time I lived there. I miss it still.

  3. Good point. Who ever thought that Parkdale would turn into a place that people really wanted to be. I always liked it, but I like things a little rough around the edges.
For that matter, who ever imagined that Ossington would be a go to place.
