I was curious about the German phrase “der Kafer Fahrer” . It’s the name of the Beetle Drivers Club, a group of enthusiasts who own and drive the early VWs identified as those with split rear windows or oval rear windows. My first beetle, a 1956 sunroof model which I bought used in 1958 had the oval window. I liked it so much, I traded it in for a new 1959 model with the bigger rectangular window. That was the one that took Barbara and I to Florida and many other places. It also won me a “gold” watch from Volkswagen after it transported us for 100,000 kilometres without a major repair.
