The original occupant was the Sun Tavern (approx. 1830-1850) Thomas  Elliot, owner. At the time the city was centred on “Old Town”, Jarvis and Front.

Yonge Street was on the western outskirts of town and still quite rural. The city directory of 1834 only lists a handful of residents north of Lot (Queen) Street.

Mr. Crane writes:

The name of the owner of the Sun Tavern is Thomas Elliott, not Elliott Thomas. His family settled 10 miles east of the Town of York about 1800. In 1827 he married Isabella Mcintosh of the Town of York. She is my great great great grandfather’s younger sister. My 3xG grandfather (James) .’and his young famlily lived in a frame house facing Queen St.., beside the tavern.

I so enjoy the photos. I remember my mother taking me to this Woolworths when I was a child.
